About 2,000 Medical Doctors in Nigeria out of 6, 000 produced annually, face problem of placement for Housemanship as 4, 000 capacity Centralized System cannot contain them, said the Registrar , Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Fatimah Kyari.
Kyari who made the disclosure to the Senate Committee on Health during 2026 budget defence session in Abuja on Friday, accordingly sought for inclusion of State and Private Hospitals in the Centealized Housemanship System for accommodation of entire 6,000 Medical Doctors produced annually.
“A total of about 6,000 Medical Doctors are produced annually from the various medical schools while the Centralized Housemanship System in operation has capacity for 4,000 Medical Doctors.
“As a way of accommodating the 6,000 at once yearly , there is need to include state and privately owned hospitals in the Centralized Housemanship System”, she said.
She added that the need for accommodation of the 6,000 on yearly basis was very necessary as a way of solving the problem of brain drain which according to her, is bedeviling the sector.
Like many of the other regulatory agencies in the sector, Kyari said not a single kobo was released from the N1.2 billion capital vote appropriated for MDCN in 2025 fiscal year.
According to her, out of N100 million appropriated for overhead, only N37.5 million was released.
She however said that N13.859 billion was released from the N16.8 billion earmarked for personnel cost in the 2025 fiscal year.
In her remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Banigo Ipalibo (Rivers West), assured her that the committee would ensure adequate funding of the council.
