The Arewa Think Tank (ATT), a prominent non-partisan policy forum focused on security and development in Northern Nigeria and the nation as a whole, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the strategic renewal of Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
In a statement issued by the Convener of ATT, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, the group described the reappointment as a masterstroke that ensures continuity, stability, and the consolidation of the significant achievements made under Marwa’s leadership.
The group asserted that this decisive move signals the President’s unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s youth and national security from the dangers of narcotics.
“By reappointing Brigadier-General Marwa, President Tinubu has demonstrated a clear focus on winning the war against drug abuse and trafficking,” Yakubu stated.
Marwa, who was first appointed in January 2021, is widely credited with revitalizing the NDLEA, transforming it into a proactive, intelligence-driven, and results-oriented agency. During his first term, the Agency recorded remarkable accomplishments, including the arrest of over 73,000 suspects, among them high-profile drug barons, and the seizure of more than 15 million kilograms of various illicit substances.
This robust enforcement was complemented by a significant increase in successful prosecutions and the launch of aggressive, nationwide awareness campaigns aimed at educational institutions and communities to reduce demand and promote a culture of prevention.
“The Arewa Think Tank is particularly pleased that President Tinubu has chosen to build upon these achievements.
General Marwa’s reappointment is a vote of confidence in his dedicated efforts and a directive to intensify our fight against the syndicates that threaten our youth. The battle is far from over, but with this sustained leadership, victory is within reach,” Yakubu expressed.
The ATT’s statement emphasized that Marwa’s reappointment, which extends his tenure to 2031, comes at a critical time as the NDLEA ramps up its operations against both domestic drug cartels and international trafficking networks.
The group expressed confidence that under Marwa’s continued leadership, the Agency will further increase its impact, contributing to a safer, healthier, and more secure Nigeria.
