From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna

The newly established Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia (FUASK), has officially begun its first academic session with approximately 2,000 pioneer students, as directed by the Federal Government.

President Bola Tinubu had instructed the institution to commence academic activities in September 2025, following its recent approval.

Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Quirix described the launch as a significant achievement that enhances Nigeria’s higher education sector.

FUASK’s curriculum is designed to create self-reliant graduates equipped with entrepreneurial and innovative skills, integrating 30% of courses focused on business enterprise development, environmental studies, and social governance.

Professor Quirix acknowledged that establishing a new university presents challenges, but the Federal Government has been supportive by approving personnel and overhead costs.

Additionally, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has provided capital support for ongoing construction projects. However, he emphasized that funding is often insufficient, and the university is exploring other avenues for sustainable growth.

Out of the 1,000 candidates offered admission through JAMB, 650 have accepted their offers. The university is dedicated to ensuring that every student goes through the proper central admission process.

The Vice Chancellor reassured parents and students about safety measures in place, highlighting the deployment of security personnel to protect staff and students.

Pioneer students have expressed their excitement about their admission. Bonath Jethro, who is studying Cybersecurity, praised the university’s smooth registration process. Ofurum Chioma, a Medical Laboratory Science student, shared her commitment to focusing her research on addressing local health challenges.
