The Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria, Kaduna State, is nearing completion of its runway expansion project.
It is expected to offer a solution to airlines seeking alternatives to Kaduna Airport due to evening traffic congestion.
According to the Rector of NCAT, Dr. Danjuma Ismail, the University of Aviation Technology’s expanded runway will enable the institution to accommodate more air traffic for bigger and commercial aircraft.

Dr. Ismail stated that the Kaduna Airport is experiencing difficulties handling traffic in the afternoon and evening due to security challenges in the area, leading some airlines to seek alternative options. He noted that NCAT can offer such services once the runway expansion is fully completed.
The first phase of the contract for the runway expansion, which began about five years ago, is ongoing and expected to be completed by the end of the year. The college will then commence the procurement process for the second phase of the project.
However, the rector expressed concerns about some individuals claiming ownership of parts of the land earmarked for the construction, which is currently subject to litigation.
The runway, originally 1.6 kilometers long, was designed for smaller aircraft used for training exercises. With the expansion, NCAT aims to attract more commercial traffic and provide additional services.
In addition to the runway expansion, NCAT is working to convert the acquired Zaria Hotel into a four-star hotel to accommodate students and other members of the public.
The hotel was purchased for N1.313 billion from the Africa Continental Hotel in June 2023. The Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, had stated that the hotel would be converted into classrooms and hostels for NCAT students.
