The Nigerian football community is mourning the loss of Okwuchukwu ‘Allen’ Waobikeze, a gifted former winger for the Super Eagles, who passed away recently, days after the death of the team’s former captain and goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

Known affectionately as ‘Babaoo’ among fans and teammates, Waobikeze was celebrated for his powerful left foot and exceptional ball control, skills that made him a standout figure on the pitch. Despite limited appearances for the Nigerian national team due to fierce competition during his playing days, he left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s domestic football scene with his flair and creativity.

Throughout his career, Waobikeze showcased his talents at several prominent Nigerian clubs. He was a key player for Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now known as Heartland FC). At these clubs, his ability to mesmerize defenders and create scoring opportunities earned him admiration from fans and respect from peers alike.

The sad news of his passing was confirmed on Monday by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, who shared the family’s appreciation for the outpouring of support on social media. In a heartfelt Facebook statement, Eli expressed gratitude to everyone who reached out with prayers, calls, and visits during this difficult time.

“We appreciate everyone who prayed, called, and visited my brother Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. Every funeral arrangement will be posted. Please keep our family in your prayers as we plan to send forth our beloved brother. God bless you all,” Eli wrote.

Allen Waobikeze’s legacy remains in the hearts of many Nigerians who witnessed his beautiful style of play and his commitment to the game. His passing marks a solemn moment for Nigerian football, but his contributions will not be forgotten.
