The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London.
The declaration of a federal public holiday to honour Buhari was contained in a statement released by the Ministry of Interior and signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary.
According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the federal public holiday as a mark of respect for Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria.
He noted that Buhari’s legacy in democratic governance and national development remains a reference point in the country’s political history.
The statement reads in part, “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation.
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld”, it said.
The Minister also encouraged Nigerians to honour the late president’s memory by embracing peace, patriotism, and unity — principles Buhari consistently advocated throughout his time in public service.
The announcement came in the wake of the national mourning declared by President Tinubu, who had earlier ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast for seven days.
The Federal Government expressed its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of the late leader’s soul.
Buhari was aged 83.
