From Femi Mustapha, in Kaduna

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has commended the commitment of the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani in tackling climate change.

This commendation followed a meeting between NiMet and Special Adviser Hon. Yusuf Amoke to Governor Uba Sani on Climate change and Management of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Kaduna Office.

Hon Amoke, who was on a familiarization visit that evolved into a strategic engagement, discussed strengthening collaboration on climate action, particularly through the effective use of early warning systems and the implementation of the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP).

The meeting, according to Amoke, provided a valuable platform to explore key areas of collaboration between NiMet and the Kaduna State Government in advancing climate action and improving early warning systems.

During the engagement, the new Station Manager, Mr. Mahmoud Suleiman, who recently assumed duty, expressed deep appreciation for the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Uba Sani, particularly highlighting his unwavering commitment to climate governance and proactive steps toward building resilience across Kaduna State.

The Station Manager highlighted the importance of collaboration in mitigating the impacts of climate change, especially in agriculture and water resource management.

This strategic collaboration marks another milestone in Kaduna State’s drive toward evidence-based climate policies, improved climate literacy, and enhanced preparedness for weather-related risks. We look forward to strengthening this partnership as we collectively work to safeguard our environment and the livelihoods of our people.

The meeting focused on strengthening the partnership between NiMet and the Kaduna State Government to improve access to climate information and enhance disaster preparedness.

NiMet highlighted the need for collaborative efforts in agricultural planning and integrated water resource management, acknowledging the significance of timely and accurate weather and climate information.

The partnership aims to support climate-smart agricultural practices and improve resilience to climate change impacts.
Overall, the collaboration between NiMet and Kaduna State signifies a proactive approach to addressing climate change challenges and building a more resilient society.

A key highlight of the visit was the formal presentation of the Annual Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) in English and Hausa. This bilingual approach aims to enhance public access, community understanding, and grassroots dissemination of vital climate information.
